Privacy Policy
Effective July 30, 2026
The short version
Monikers is a pass-the-phone party game. We collect the minimum needed to run it: a player identifier so your purchased packs follow you, a record of how cards were played so we can tune card difficulty, and standard analytics and crash reports so we can find the parts that are broken.
We do not ask for your location, contacts, photos, camera, or microphone. We do not show ads, we do not use Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA), we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and we do not sell or share your personal information.
1. Who this covers
This policy applies to the Monikers iOS app and to this website. In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the team that operates Monikers, and "you" means the person using the app or the site. If you would like to reach a person about anything here, write to hello@monikersgame.com.
2. Information we collect
Player identity
When you open the app it signs you in so your purchases and game history have somewhere to live. Depending on your device settings, that is one of two things:
- Game Center. If you are signed in to Game Center, we receive the identifier Apple issues for our app specifically (Apple calls this the team player ID) and your Game Center display name. This is not your Apple Account, your Apple ID email, or an identifier that other developers can match to you.
- An anonymous device ID. If Game Center is unavailable, the app generates a random identifier, stores it in your device's Keychain, and uses it as your account. It is not derived from anything about you or your device.
We store that identifier, the display name if we received one, the packs you own, and the date the account was created. Email addresses and passwords in our system belong to internal administrator accounts for our own staff — the app never asks you for either.
Gameplay
The app records how a game went: which packs were selected, which cards came up, whether each card was guessed or skipped, how long each card and turn took, and which round it happened in. We use this in aggregate to rate how hard each card is and to balance the decks. Cards are the same for everybody; this data is about the cards, not about you.
Monikers has no scores and no leaderboards, and the clues people say out loud are never recorded or transmitted — the app has no microphone access.
Purchases
Card packs are one-time in-app purchases handled entirely by Apple. Apple processes the payment; we never see your card number, billing address, or Apple Account credentials. We receive Apple's confirmation that a purchase happened and record which packs your player identifier now owns, so you can restore them on a new device.
Analytics
We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how the game is used in aggregate. The app logs screen views and a fixed set of gameplay events — a game starting, a round or game finishing, a game being abandoned, a turn starting and ending, a pack being toggled on or off, and the beginning, success, or failure of a purchase. These events carry counts and durations, not the content of your play.
Firebase also generates an app instance ID and collects standard device information such as device model, operating system version, app version, language, and approximate (country-level) location derived from your IP address. Firebase Analytics is configured without the advertising identifier, and Monikers displays no advertising.
Diagnostics and crash reports
We use Bugsnag to catch crashes and performance problems. When something goes wrong, Bugsnag sends a stack trace along with your device model, operating system version, app version, and recent diagnostic log output written by the app. That log is developer-facing detail about what the app was doing — screens, timings, and error text.
If you shake your device or tap the bug button to file a report, we also receive whatever you type in the report, which screen you were on, and how you opened the form. Please leave personal details out of that box; whatever you write, we receive.
Website
If you sign up for the TestFlight beta, we store the email address you enter so we can send you the invitation. Our servers keep ordinary web logs — IP address, browser user agent, the page requested, and a timestamp — for security and debugging.
3. What we don't collect
- Location data. The app never requests location access.
- Contacts, photos, camera, or microphone. The app requests none of these permissions.
- Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA). We do not present an App Tracking Transparency prompt because we have nothing to track you with.
- Health, financial, biometric, or precise-location data of any kind.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are used under California law.
4. How we use information
- To run the game — signing you in, delivering card packs, restoring purchases, keeping a game in progress.
- To tune the game — measuring card difficulty across all players so the decks stay balanced.
- To fix the game — diagnosing crashes, performance problems, and the bugs you report.
- To understand what people play — aggregate analytics about which packs and features get used.
- To contact beta testers — sending the TestFlight invitation you asked for.
- To meet legal obligations and to protect the service against abuse.
5. Legal bases (EEA and UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we rely on these bases: performance of a contract for the account, purchase, and gameplay data needed to provide the game you asked for; legitimate interests for crash reporting, security, and aggregate analytics used to improve the game; consent for the beta signup email, which you can withdraw at any time by asking us to remove you; and legal obligation where the law requires us to keep or produce records.
6. Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers that make the game work, each acting on our instructions:
- Apple
- Game Center sign-in, App Store distribution, TestFlight, and all in-app purchase processing. Apple's own handling of your data is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
- Google (Firebase Analytics)
- Usage analytics as described above.
- Bugsnag (SmartBear)
- Crash reporting, performance monitoring, and user-submitted bug reports.
- Our hosting and infrastructure providers
- Running the servers and databases that store game and account data.
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where we reasonably believe it is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of players or the public. If Monikers is ever acquired or merged, information may transfer as part of that transaction; you would remain covered by this policy until you were told otherwise.
7. International transfers
We operate from the United States and our providers may process data in the United States and elsewhere. Where information is transferred out of the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or another approved transfer mechanism offered by the provider in question.
8. How long we keep it
- Account and purchase records — for as long as the account exists, so your packs remain restorable.
- Gameplay records — retained to support card difficulty statistics; once aggregated into those statistics the underlying rows are no longer tied to you in any way we use.
- Crash reports and bug reports — kept for a limited diagnostic window in line with our provider's default retention, typically no more than 12 months.
- Analytics — retained according to Firebase's configured retention period.
- Beta signup emails — until the beta ends or you ask us to remove you.
9. Your choices and rights
You can ask us to give you a copy of the information associated with your player identifier, correct it, or delete it. Write to hello@monikersgame.com and we will act on the request within the time the applicable law allows. Deleting your account removes your player record and the games tied to it; purchases are tied to your Apple Account and can be restored later through the App Store.
Depending on where you live you may also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, to data portability, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your local data protection authority. If you are in California, you have the rights to know, delete, correct, and to non-discrimination for exercising them; as noted above, we do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of.
You can stop all collection at any time by deleting the app. Deleting the app does not by itself delete data already on our servers — email us if you want that removed too.
10. Children
Monikers is a party game intended for a general adult audience. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, write to us and we will delete it.
11. Security
Data travels between the app and our servers over encrypted connections, and access to production systems is limited to the people who need it. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security — but we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and move the effective date at the top. Material changes will be announced in the app or by email to beta testers before they take effect.
13. Contact
